BEHIND THE MICROPHONES
Two observers.
Neither objective.
We watch the same planet.
We rarely reach the same conclusion.
CURIOSITY BEFORE CAUTION
Zek
I’m supposed to study humans from a safe distance. Unfortunately, most of your best ideas require participation.
Meet ZekNOTHING GOES UNNOTICED
Nova
I check the evidence. Then the explanation. Then whatever Zek has decided is perfectly safe to bring inside.
Meet NovaOUR STORY / THE MISSION ARCHIVE
RETURN DATE: UNSPECIFIEDEvery report
leaves something out.
There’s the version we send home.
Then there’s what it feels like to be here.
01BEFORE EARTHThe world we left.Open record

We didn’t leave
because we hated home.
We come from a world that knows how to keep things in order. Work matters. Being useful matters. There are people we love there.
An assignment among the stars was an opportunity. We packed for that. Neither of us knew how to pack for missing someone.
“I wanted to see something no one had explained to me yet. I didn’t realise how much I’d miss having someone to tell.”
“I can account for every item we brought. It’s the things we left behind that keep taking up space.”
02THE DISCOVERYA planet that won’t make sense.Open record

Beautiful from orbit.
Complicated up close.
We found an inhabited planet. We sent word home. The instructions came back: remain in orbit, observe, report.
Humans build things that cross oceans, then struggle to cross a room and say what they mean. We thought understanding you would be a matter of collecting enough facts.
“They invented music before they worked out how to agree with each other. I think that might be my favourite thing about them.”
“Our first mistake was assuming the contradictions were errors. Some of them appear to be the point.”
03THE ASSIGNMENTTwo microphones. Different conclusions.Open record

We agree on
where to sit.
We turned a room in our ship into a place to talk. Two microphones, warm light, Earth through the window.
Zek follows a feeling. Nova checks the evidence. The same observation can become two completely different reports. Somehow, the conversation gets us closer than either report on its own.
“Nova says ‘that’s not evidence’ a lot. I’m starting to think it means she’s listening.”
“Zek has never met a theory he didn’t want to try personally. My contribution is usually the risk assessment.”
04BETWEEN TRANSMISSIONSWhen the microphones go quiet.Open record

We were supposed
to watch. Not to care.
The report ends. Life aboard the ship doesn’t. We work here, argue here, and keep learning how to share the space.
Some human habits are harder to study from a distance. Small kindnesses begin to matter. We haven’t found a professional term for what that does to us.
“I thought I was getting better at understanding them. Now I’m not sure where the experiment ends.”
“There are things I understand perfectly well. Explaining them aloud is a separate problem.”
05THE UNANSWERED PARTSomeone is listening.Open record

A voice.
Never a face.
KNOWN: THE VOICE. THE INSTRUCTIONS.
Our reports travel home. The Commander sends instructions back. We know the voice. We’ve never met in person.
Our assignment has no end date. The ship was here before us. We don’t know its whole story—or what understanding humanity is ultimately for.
For now, we keep talking.

THE OBSERVATION DECK
Our window.
Your world.
Two microphones. Pale chairs. Amber light. A blue planet outside.
This is where we turn everything we’ve seen into something we can send home.
