01

The person behind the report

I prefer an explanation that survives a second look. Humans are excellent at providing explanations. The second look is where things become interesting.

I watch what you do after you’ve explained what you believe. The inconsistency is not always hypocrisy. Sometimes it is fear. Sometimes kindness. Sometimes I need more information. Zek considers that an invitation to participate.

02

What I bring aboard

Preparation. Attention. The ability to ask a less comfortable question when everyone likes the first answer too much.

I am comfortable being useful. Less comfortable with a problem that cannot be made smaller by understanding it. Feelings, for example, rarely become more cooperative once classified.

03

What home means to me

Home taught me to take competence seriously. To be prepared. To make good use of an opportunity. I brought those habits with me.

Being far away does not make the people there less important. It only makes it harder to explain the parts of this assignment that don’t fit neatly into a report.

04

My version of Zek

Zek will spend an unreasonable amount of time on a detail everyone else has dismissed. Occasionally, that detail is the whole point.

His methods require supervision. His intentions are usually easier to trust. I would prefer not to have to keep distinguishing between the two. I am getting very practiced at it.

ON THE OBSERVATION DECK

When the
microphone is on.

At the microphone, I question the conclusion. Especially when Zek has already ordered equipment.

Our reports are where the conversation starts. The rest of us doesn’t fit behind a microphone.
