The person behind the report
I notice the little things first. The dog waiting at the door. The song someone plays when nobody’s listening. The absurd amount of ceremony around a birthday cake. I want to know why it matters. Usually, I want to try it before the answer arrives.
I can get carried away. A simple question becomes an experiment; the experiment becomes a situation; Nova wants to know why the situation is making a noise. I would like the record to show that my intentions are usually excellent.

What I bring aboard
Curiosity is useful when the obvious answer doesn’t fit. So is improvisation. So is noticing that someone who says they’re fine has stopped talking.
I want to be good at this. Not just entertaining. Not just the colleague who needs checking. There are things I notice because I care, and I don’t think caring makes them less real.

What home means to me
Home is where I don’t have to explain every part of myself. There are expectations there, too. I want the people waiting for our reports to see that sending me was a good decision.
Distance makes ordinary things important. Familiar voices. Being understood. Knowing where you belong. Apparently, humans have a lot of songs about this.

My version of Nova
Nova can find the weak point in an explanation before I’ve finished giving it. It’s an irritating talent. Also, a useful one.
She takes the work seriously. I take her opinion seriously. We don’t always agree about the safest next step, but I notice when she makes room for my idea anyway.

ON THE OBSERVATION DECK
When the
microphone is on.
At the microphone, I follow the tangent. Sometimes it turns out to be the part worth reporting.
Our reports are where the conversation starts. The rest of us doesn’t fit behind a microphone.
