A date is a useful way to file an event. It is a poor way to understand what it felt like to be there. I wanted to see the ordinary morning before the extraordinary thing happened: the work still unfinished, the warning not yet understood, the decision that could not be taken back.
So I follow the record into the moment. At Thermopylae, there are people beyond the famous number. In Pompeii, there is a city before there is an excavation. On the way to the Moon, there are human beings inside the achievement.
I move through these stories as a visitor. The encounters are imagined; the historical outcome belongs to the people who lived it. Where the record is uncertain, certainty would be a poor souvenir to bring home.
Each transmission follows a story through its consequences. Not because history was inevitable, but because the choices were made by people who had to make them without knowing what we know now.
What drew us inHistorical events become lived experiences, with attention to the people, causes and consequences behind the familiar headline.
