The first time I watched a gecko walk across a surface it had no business holding onto, I assumed I was missing something. I was. The explanation was smaller than the animal, stranger than glue, and far more interesting than calling it a trick.
Earth keeps doing this. A shrimp makes a weapon out of a bubble. A leaf washes itself. A volcano produces lightning. I follow the apparent impossibility down to the mechanism, then return to the world large enough to see the whole thing happen.
We will look closer, slow things down, and follow forces that are usually invisible. The models are a way to see the process; the process is real. Understanding it does not make the result less extraordinary.
I came here expecting to investigate a species. The planet has been interrupting ever since. I have stopped asking it to behave more reasonably.
What drew us inReal biology and physics offer discoveries that seem fictional until Nova reveals how they work.
